FAQ
Why don't I pay residence tax in my first year in Japan?
Residence tax (住民税) is billed from June based on the previous calendar year's income in Japan. If you had no Japanese income last year, there's nothing to bill — but your take-home drops in year two, so budget for it.
What changed for 2026?
The minimum employment income deduction rose to ¥740,000 and the basic deduction to up to ¥1,040,000 for most earners, so income tax is lower than in 2025. Employees also started paying the child & childcare support levy in 2026.
Why is my real payslip a little different?
This tool assumes Kyokai Kenpo Tokyo health insurance, no dependents and no other deductions. Company health insurance societies, dependents and other income all move the numbers by a few thousand yen.
